Frequently asked questions

These are the questions we get most often. First about the game itself, then about the app, your account and Premium. Is your question not here? Then get in touch.

How do I learn the game?

Fastest with Leer toepen: a guided first game at a real table, in the app and in the browser. The table explains each step the moment it happens, from your first trick to the dead man's round. After that you can practise against the computer at three levels. To read everything again, the rules are in full under the rules and in Uitleg in the app.

How many players does Toepen take?

Two to six. A private table fits two to six players. A public table starts with four, or with three if nobody joins within a minute and the three want to. Against the computer you choose one to five opponents.

Which cards do you need?

Toepen uses 32 cards: the 7, 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king and ace of every suit. That is an ordinary deck without the 2 to 6.

What is the highest card?

The ten. From low to high the order is jack, queen, king, ace, 7, 8, 9, 10. There are no trumps, and a card of a suit other than the one led cannot win the trick.

What happens if nobody calls a toep?

Then the toeper wins the round outright. Everyone who folded pays the number of marks from before the toep.

Can you toep twice in a row?

No. Whoever toeped last may not toep again straight away. Anyone else may, so a round can go up more than once. See toeping again.

When may you call vuile was?

At the start of the round, before the first card is played. A genuine vuile was is jack, queen, king and ace, or if the table allows it three of them with a 7. You may also bluff, but whoever is caught bluffing takes a mark and plays with open cards. It is all under vuile was.

Does anyone ever see a vuile was nobody checked?

No. If nobody checks, the caller gets new cards and it is never shown whether the hand was genuine. A bluff nobody checked stays the bluffer's secret.

Does a jack finish count for players who folded?

No. A jack finish doubles the marks for everyone still in the round. Anyone who folded earlier has already paid and does not pay double.

At how many marks are you out?

At 15 by default. At a private table you choose a limit from 5 to 20 marks. One mark below it you are on the edge and play your dead man's round.

What happens when my time runs out?

When playing a card, calling or folding, or playing or sitting out, you forfeit the game if your clock runs out: your marks stop counting and the others play on. The vuile was moment and a check turn are windows: silence is an answer there and nobody loses anything. Whoever forfeits or walks out of a public game three times within seven days may not join public tables for a week.

Which devices does Toep run on?

The app is for iPhone and iPad, on the App Store. Online play also works in the browser at detoepapp.nl, with the same account. There is no Android version.

Is Toep free?

Yes. The app and online play are free, with ads. Ads are only tailored to you if you give permission. If you would rather not see them, you can take Toep Premium.

What do you get with Premium?

Toep Premium removes the ads and gives you extra XP, exclusive card backs, avatars and banners, detailed statistics, room for five clubs instead of one, and replays of your finished games. You take it per month or per year, and it renews automatically until you cancel. You cancel in the subscriptions of your Apple account.

I bought the ad-free version years ago. Does it still count?

Yes. The one-time purchase of the ad-free version still applies to the scorekeeper. For online play there is Premium.

Do I need an account?

Not for the scorekeeper: that works on your phone, even without internet. For online play you do. You create an account with Apple, with Google or with your e-mail address and a password, and then pick your username.

How do I choose or change my username?

A username has 4 to 25 characters: letters, digits, an underscore or a hyphen. You can change it once every 30 days. Names that are hurtful or imitate someone else are refused or changed by us; see the community guidelines.

How do I play with friends?

Open a private table and share the code or the link; whoever has it joins, and you start as soon as at least two are seated. You can also add friends by their username. Friends see each other online, send each other messages and invite each other to a private table.

What is a club?

A club is a regular group with its own table with house rules, a noticeboard and its own leaderboard. You join by invitation or with the club code. You can be in one club for free; with Premium in five.

How do I report a player?

Open the player's profile and choose Report. You can also do so from a message, a club post or an idea. We read every report, and a decision is always made by a person. If you no longer want to see someone, you can block them.

How do I delete my account?

In the app in the settings, under Account, or on the website on your account page. After deleting you have 30 days to change your mind: sign in again within that time and your account is back. After that it is erased for good. Read more in the privacy policy.

From what age can you use Toep?

From 13. The terms of use say so too.

I have a question or found a bug. Where do I go?

In the app via Contact us, or by e-mail. Every way is on the contact page.
